Credit Note Voucher in Tally Prime
A Credit Note is generally used when a business needs to reduce the amount receivable from a customer. One of the most common uses is when customer returns goods that were previously sold.
For a Sales Return, the basic accounting treatment is:
Sales Return A/c → Dr.
Output GST A/c → Dr.
Customer/Sundry Debtor A/c → Cr.
Example
Suppose goods worth ₹5,000 are returned by a customer and GST is 18%.
GST = ₹900
Total Credit Note = ₹5,900
| Particulars | Debit (₹) | Credit (₹) |
| Sales Return A/c | 5,000 | — |
| Output CGST A/c | 450 | — |
| Output SGST A/c | 450 | — |
| Customer A/c | — | 5,900 |
For an inter-state sales return, Output IGST is debited instead of Output CGST and Output SGST.
Accounting Treatment for Credit Note
For these sales return assignments:
Intra-State Sales Return
Sales Return A/c — Dr.
Output CGST A/c — Dr.
Output SGST A/c — Dr.
Sundry Debtor A/c — Cr.
Inter-State Sales Return
Sales Return A/c — Dr.
Output IGST A/c — Dr.
Sundry Debtor A/c — Cr.
Important Points
- Credit Note reduces the amount receivable from the customer.
- For sales return, the customer/debtor is credited.
- Sales Return A/c is debited.
- GST originally charged on the returned goods is reversed/adjusted according to the applicable GST treatment.
- Use Agst Ref to link the Credit Note with the original sales invoice.
- These assignments are accounting-only; no stock item, quantity, rate, or godown details are included.
- In Tally Prime, the exact GST treatment can depend on the company’s GST configuration and the reason/document type, so students should use the appropriate Credit Note/GST options configured in their practice company.
