Zero value voucher entry in tally

A Zero Value Voucher in TallyPrime is used when you need to record an inventory movement or transaction without affecting the monetary value of the stock.

For example, suppose a company receives 10 promotional samples free of cost from a supplier. You may want to record the 10 units in inventory, but since nothing was paid for them, the transaction value is ₹0.

Example:

Received 10 Nos. of Pen Drive as free samples from ABC Traders at ₹0 value.

Here:

  • Quantity: 10 Nos.
  • Rate: ₹0
  • Value: ₹0
  • Inventory quantity increases, while there is no purchase value recorded for those units.

Why is it useful?

Zero-value entries can be useful for situations such as:

  • 🎁 Free samples received
  • 📦 Promotional goods received at no cost
  • 🔄 Certain stock movements where no monetary value is involved
  • 🧪 Free trial/demo items
  • 🏷️ Items received without a purchase cost

Important point

A zero-value inventory entry is different from simply entering a normal purchase at ₹0. The appropriate voucher/feature depends on why the stock is being received or issued and how you want TallyPrime to affect inventory and accounting.

Important student instruction

For these assignments, the free item is a separate stock item. Students should:

  • Enter the quantity of the free item.
  • Keep the Rate blank.
  • Keep the Amount blank/zero.
  • Ensure the voucher type allows zero-valued transactions.
  • Apply GST to the billed taxable goods, not by simply adding GST to the zero-value free item. TallyHelp states that free supplies/samples are recorded at zero value, and its GST FAQ says GST is not applicable to free supplies/samples in this context.
  • Use CGST + SGST for intra-state transactions and IGST for inter-state transactions, according to the place-of-supply situation.
